Arthur Baker
A ground-breaking producer who fused the sounds of the early eighties New York underground to New Order and The Haçienda. Arthur Baker makes game-changing records, exercising a huge influence on the development of clubs and dance music.
Starting as a DJ in Boston, Arthur’s main passion was production. He moved to New York in 1981 and hooked up with Tommy Boy Records. From here Arthur changed the musical landscape forever with Afrika Baambaata and The Soul Sonic Force’s “Planet Rock”. He followed this with the equally seminal “Rocker’s Revenge”. It was these records and the New York club scene he ruled that brought him to the attention of New Order and The Hacienda and a long lasting friendship was forged.
Arthur went on to produce two of New Order’s greatest records, “Confusion” and “Thieves Like Us” and is credited with moving the band into a more dance acoustic direction.
Moving to London in the 1990’s, Arthur found himself enjoying the UK scene more than the US . He opened The Elbow Rooms bars and a restaurant called Harlem. He returned to Djing in 2000 with a 20th Tommy Boy Anniversary Tour, outings with New Order, and his own club, Return To New York.
