My Skool Mix 1984 – 1988 (01:30) by A Guy Called Gerald
True to form Gerald delivers his “My Skool” mix of choice and authentic acid house tunes for fac51thehacienda.com, displaying his leaning towards the US and European originators of the sound with traditional slabs of acid house nonchalance which still sound as fresh today as some twenty years ago.
A ninety minute basic acid house workout which takes in the influences of Chicago and Detroit with classic spoken vocals and sultry techno flourishes, the mix starts out with jacking instrumentals over worked by Gerald with his deft sample-delic touches and scat vocals. Produced with the nous one has come to expect from Geralds wizardry even from the early days when he started out with 808 State, he employs the tricks of the trade he has learnt with his live remixing and intimate knowledge of early samplers, drum machines and the like to produce a bona fide banging acid mix which not only reflects the sound of The Hac but other Mancunian clubs of the era including Konspiracy, The Thunderdome and Hulme party central, The Kitchen.
Gerald’s testament to the restless energy of the early acid house scene, a more vocal led section comes to the fore in the second part of the mix which sees the bassline later used by Hardfloor’s “Hardtrance Aexperience”, Pierre’s Pfantasy Club’s “Dream Girl”, the piano line half inched by Cola Boy in their hit “Seven Ways To Love” enter the fray before Gerald closes up with Joe Smooth’s “Promised Land”.
A tribute to the classical beauty and originality of the genre by one of its finest practioners, Gerald’s “My Skool” mix is a class in acid you should definitely attend.
