Slam Haçienda Classics Volume One (00:58) by Slam
The Scottish DJ duo supremos, Orde and Stuart specially record a set which takes from the influences that shaped their early career and recalls their visits to the Hacienda in the early days of acid. Exclusively recorded for this website, “Slam Hacienda Classics Volume One” proves a sublime selection of some better and some lesser known classics from some of the seminal labels that provided the soundtrack from 1986 to 1992.
Eclectically mixing up a variety of styles that take in hip house, tribal, early techno and acidic influences, the Slam boys deliver a well constructed homage to the tunes that shaped the development of the dance scene, assembled with the same deftness of touch that’s marked their international DJ career. With intelligent references that will please more than a few vinyl junkies, there’s a lightness to the first largely instrumental half hour which sees 303’s join body popping electro, thundering bass and Detroit styled stabs which highlight the early records that shaped Slam’s sound.
Joining Robert Owens “I’ll Be Your Friend” seamlessly to Urban Soul’s “Alright” some halfway into the mix, the second half leans towards some of Chicago and Detroit’s most furious early jack trax as Adonis, Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson (as his alter ego Reese) enter the frame as the hour long volume builds to a stunning and emotive climax. Well crafted and evidently programmed with a great deal of respect and care, “Slam Hacienda Classics Volume One” is a stimulating romp through early sounds that though all classics in their own right, seem hardly to have aged at all.
