Here's an archived interview with Graeme that we thought you'd enjoy.
In the second summer of love Graeme took the opportunity to play the Haçienda when Mike Pickering went on his first ever holiday. Mike asked Graeme to take his place at the now legendary Nude.
“When I got there the club was still building up and it hadn’t really gone mental yet so I went up the week before I was due to play cos I wasn’t working that night and couldn’t believe what I saw.
“When I went up to DJ, the whole night was amazing, within 20 minutes the whole place was packed which was a weird one as well. And then for three weeks I had an absolute ball, I didn’t want it to end. Then I got a call from Mike after I’d headed back to Nottingham the following week asking “Did I want to come and do it with him every week?” and I was like “Fuck me, yes!” We did Nude for 4 years and then Mike went off with M-People and I stayed there and was there for 8 years in all.”
In those eight years, following the 1988 to 1991 heyday of the Park / Pickering partnership Graeme went to take over the Saturday night residency at the club from 1992 to 1996, indulging his tastes for US garage along with the similarly inspired Tom Wainwright . In this period he guested in the best of Ibiza, Europe, Asia, North and South America, including sets with Junior Vasquez ,Frankie Knuckles, Roger Sanchez, and Tony Humphries.
Graeme was notably the first UK DJ to play South America and Australia, he also toured the United States in 1990 with New Order and Bjork as part of the United States Of Haçienda tour. It remains one of his favourite memories.
“The United States Of Haçienda was brilliant cos that was tied up with a New Order tour of America and I remember having to DJ on the same bill as The Sugarcubes featuring Bjork, Public Image Limited, then me, then New Order. I was DJing on the tour and then the club coincided with Jon Dasilva, A Guy Called Gerald and a few others. It was great. I was playing American House music in a club in Manchester and then I was over in the Stares playing it back to them. I suppose we re-exported house music back to them in many ways.”
After the closure of The Haçienda in 1997 Graeme continues to be one of the most in demand DJ’s in the world . He has become one of the most respected dance music radio DJ’s with networked shows for Kiss FM, Galaxy and Juice FM.
Technically one of the finest DJ's in the world, Graeme's discernment and taste for the US side of house shone through on the radio as he broke innumerable tracks that went on to be huge hits. US labels would punt him their new releases way ahead of anyone else.
His early work with Submission Records saw him remix Eric B & Rakim in 1988 and he continued this with a strong succession of “Parkside” remixes and productions throughout his career. His back catalogue includes BBG’s “Snappiness”, Eleanor Mills ‘“Mr Right”, Brand New Heavies’ “Back To Love”, Change “Searching”, DJ Pierre’s “Come Fly With Me”, and Silver City “Love Infinity”. Most recently a remix of Pierre Phantasy Club’s “Dream Girl” for Justin Robertson’s recent “The Art Of Acid” Complilation.
Graeme continues to champion new music and artists both live and on his radio show.
Graeme also has recently developed a companion career as a University Lecturer on music and radio production.
In the 20 years since Graeme first landed at the Haçienda, he remains tremendously loyal to the club and it’s ideals, remaining one of most popular DJ’s on Haçienda Tour dates throughout the world..
