“Mr Nice”
As raconteur and beatnik, Howard Marks delivers a one take vocal in a dark piece of rock and roll mischief, as Howard raps about Merlin, the light of Lucifer and matters thereof.
Hooky on Dark Starr
“Howard was suggested by Mani ,we’d met him a few times. I really didnt know what Howard was going to do. I sent him the track ‘cos the interesting thing about that track is it has few changes in it, it’s in one key, a long groove really, and we needed something to go like totally over it and he literally came in and just got that!
He stood there and just delivered this State of the World rap which I think is absolutely fantastic!
It’s a long track but the great thing is that when we played it live it actually worked and then going into Gary’s version of it, “She Says” worked too.
Doing the two version’s was Mani’s suggestion; He thought it was a great rock tune and needed a great rock vocal! Gary delivered that and it’s going on the album.”
Howard Marks on Dark Starr
“Hooky asked if I could add some spoken word to one of the tracks he had written for Freebass. Both Hooky and Mani are old and respected friends of mine, so I said yes immediately. Hooky sent me the Dark Starr track. I loved the driving bass line and felt a titillating darkness and mischief feeling that I knew could go on forever.“The track’s about the light of Lucifer – the lightness of darkness, the archetypal permanence of the right bass line, the pain of a crowded Heaven, the seminal nature of spunk, and the elusive recipe for the concoction in the Holy Grail. That’s how I’d sum it up”
