Pete Wylie

Reflects surreally on the universe in a soaring, euphoric space rock groovemonster.

Hooky on " The Milky Way is Our Playground"

“Pete Wylie is a dear, dear friend and I’ve supposed to have been in a band with Pete six times at least!  I’ve also tried to record with him loads of times but it’s never come off previously. He’s a very complex character an immensely talented and likeable guy and I’m was really happy to get the chance to work with him. That LP of his “Songs Of Strength And Heartbreak” is one of my favourite records of all time.”

The title of the track came from The Sunday Times magazine, this was a gift, something Rob Gretton gave me! “Always get The Sunday Times!” he insisted, “ you must always get the Sunday Times!” Anyway I still do, so I was reading it and saw this headline about space travel, “The Milky Way is Our Playground” and it just stuck. I must have been better than I thought because he made it into the chorus and then did this wonderful stars-struck, cerebral sort of universal look at life vocal. It was fascinating to watch him do it because of the passion and the lyrics are very astute and very quick it was a pleasure to watch. I really enjoyed it. “

Pete Wylie on " The Milky Way is Our Playground"

“Well I’d worked with Andy in the past when I was making “Songs Of Strengh And Heartbreak” and he’d been in the video for “Loverboy”.

Mani I’d know since the early days of The Roses and he’d wanted to do a Wah! Heat gig with us as he told me he learnt to play bass listening to it.

Hooky I’ve known since Joy Division and me and him have almost had a band some seven huinderd and fifty two times and I love him to bits, he’s one of my favourite human beings.

He sent me a couple of tracks but because I hadn’t done something like “The Milky Way” when I heard it, I immediately knew what I wanted to do with the track.

Hooky came over to Disgracelands, the name of my house, with Phil his engineer, they stuck two laptops on me pool table and Phil recorded me then and there while Hooky passed the time working on his Hacienda book. Then I plugged my Strat and a Marshall stack and I let my fingers do the talking. It was hard to find space to put something in because there were three bass gods already competing with each other but I think I managed to add something to it. I’m really happy with what I did”
